Introduction:

Dr. Mala Kaneria completed her MBBS from Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Medical College and Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital (LTMMC and LTMGH, Sion Hospital) in 1990 and subsequently did her MD in Internal Medicine, also from LTMMC and LTMGH in 1993. Later, she joined Nair Hospital as faculty in 1994 and presently holds the designation of Professor & Unit Head at B. Y. L. Nair Charitable Hospital & TN Medical College & Kasturba Hospital for Infectious Diseases.

Dr. Kaneria has a wide experience in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases common to the tropics like Malaria, Leptospirosis, Dengue, Typhoid, Chikungunya and Tuberculosis. She has managed infections like hydatid disease, cysticercosis, amoebiasis, tropical eosinophilia and filariasis, besides rare bacterial and viral infections like Brucellosis, Ebstein Barr virus infections, etc. She has immense experience in the treatment of opportunistic infections in HIV/AIDS, especially tuberculosis, both pulmonary and extrapulmonary. Dr. Mala is particularly interested in the diagnosis and management of patients with prolonged fevers of undetermined origin, vector borne diseases and tuberculosis, both pulmonary and extrapulmonary. She also holds experience in the management of nosocomial infections and in the management of infections in specific subgroups like geriatric, diabetes, pregnancy and other immunocompromised states.

Dr. Mala is an Infection Control Co-ordinator in the Hospital Infection Control Committee (HICC) at Nair Hospital and have played a vital role in the formulation of the Antibiotic Guidelines for the MCGM. She has more than 80 publications to her credit, in peer reviewed journals, both national and international and have conducted several clinical trials as the principal investigator. She has been the guest editor of the Journal of General Medicine for 9 years and is currently on the Advisory Board of the Journal of Association of Physicians of India (JAPI). She has taken numerous lectures and been faculty at various conferences.

Dr. Kaneria is a member of various professional bodies viz. Association of Physicians of India (API), Clinical Infectious Diseases Society (CIDS), Hospital Infections Society-Mumbai Forum (HIS-MF), Indian Society of Critical Care Medicine (ISCCM), Maharashtra Chapter of Indian Society of Gastroenterology (MAHAISG), etc I have guided more than 20 post graduate students in their PG thesis and am involved in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students, both medical and dental and am a UG and PG examiner with the MUHS.
